DASLP hosts conference on clinical guideline amendment for speech-language and hearing in Taiwan

The Department of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (DASLP) hosted a conference on clinical guideline amendment for prospective application in speech-language and hearing (SLH) clinical settings in Taiwan. The conference was held in response to the urgent need of unifying the evaluation standard for clinical performances of student clinicians. Amended content and process per SLH area was followed up and discussed by the SLH department representatives and experienced clinicians.
 
  
 
“We are having more and more student clinicians for clinical practicum every year, and it is evident that the number will increase noticeably henceforward since we have more SLH departments now as opposed to a few years back then,” said Wen-Ying Yei, President of The Speech-Language-Hearing Association, Taiwan (SLHA-TW). “To ensure the quality of clinical training of each student clinician during clinical practicum, it is essential for clinical supervisors to be on the same page when evaluating student clinicians. And the best solution is to draw up clinical guidelines.”
 
Executive Director Chi-fen Chang, also promoted the idea of implementing student clinical handbook, a booklet for student clinicians to carry around to constantly self-examine what they have learned, mastered, and areas required further improvement in clinical settings. As a pioneer in speech-language and an experienced SLP, Chang found that it is crucial for student clinicians to be consciously aware of their learning progress in order to maximize their clinical experiences within limited amount of sessions.
 
“While supervisors need to spoon-feed student clinicians at the beginning, students themselves must demonstrate their growth in becoming independent SLPs and AUDs. With expectations written in black and white, students will have a clear picture of what is expected of them, and supervisors a good understanding of the progress of each student.”
