The Department of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology hosted a conference in hope of reaching consensuses in enhancing the quality of university education for speech-language and hearing in Taiwan on August 29, 2016.
Led by Chair of Department and Chair Professor Hwa Sheng, attendants of the conference discussed the outline of evaluation standards for clinical competence. The progress on the clinical guidelines enactment for speech-language-hearing clinical practicum sites across Taiwan were also followed up.
Sheng stated that the clinical fields of speech-language and hearing are in dire need of these documents.
“They must be made available for clinical supervisors," Sheng said. "The number of student clinicians in speech-language and hearing is growing. The establishment of these guidelines will not only enhance the quality of training, but also promote better quality of life for our patients.”
The President of The Speech-Language-Hearing Association, Taiwan (SLHA-TW), Chi-fen Chang, reminded that balancing ideation and practicality for the evaluation forms should be an ongoing consideration, although scoring items that are “slightly more detailed” seemed to be a better answer at present.
“We are aware of how fast the pace is and that time is never enough in hospitals and in almost every clinical setting,” said Chang. “However, a detailed evaluation form ensures student clinicians to be clearly aware of what they are capable of and what areas remain to be improved. It also helps clinical supervisors to have a better idea in terms of what to look for during the evaluation.”
Other attendants of this Conference included Li-Chun Hsiao and Yuan-Chuan Chiang as SLHA-TW Representatives; Qiu Ling Wang and Jingyi Jeng, the Department Chair from University of Taipei and National Kaosiung Normal University, respectively; Yi-Liang Yang and Shiang-Chun Cheng, the Department Chair and Faculty Representative from Hungkuang University, respectively; Tun-Shin Lo, the Departmental Representative from Chung Shan Medical University; Yen-Ling Chan and Hsiuwen Chang, the Departmental Representatives from Mackay Medical College; Hui-Chun Yang, the Departmental Representative from National Taipei University of Nursing and Health Science. Faculty from Asia University were Wan-Zu D. Chang and Hui-Chi Tien.
