First class arrival! – Department welcomes Class of 2020 at Freshman Orientation

Asia University began its five-day 2016 Freshman Orientation on September 5 to facilitate first-year students settle into the University. The Orientation this year also marked the historical moment as the Department of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology officially welcomed its very first students, Class of 2020.
Department Chair, Professor Hwa Sheng, faculty, and staff introduced the department spirit, expectations, upcoming activities, and a wide array of academic resources to help students transit to college life. Dr. Chang further encouraged students to always harbor a “PHD” (passion, humble, and diligence) in mind in order to successfully develop professional knowledge and competence in audiology and speech-language pathology.
A total of 43 first-year students were enrolled in the Department this year, looking forward to beginning their new lives as a college student. Freshman Welcome Party was also held to pass along important campus and extracurricular information to enrich students' social connections.
Students reflected that hands-on activities in the speech and hearing labs were particularly enjoyable, including patient-clinician roleplay, oral-motor evaluation, voice range profile demonstration, hearing booth experience, audiometric testing, and audiometer manipulation.
“We want our students to begin visioning themselves in terms of what they want to be by providing them a taste of our scope of practice,” Department Chair Sheng said. “The earlier they start thinking about this, the stronger learning motivation and better preparation they will likely to have.”
